Since, prior to 1603 and maybe even as late as 1707, it was impossible to spy for "Britain" as a political entity, English spies (and if necessary Scottish and Irish spies) belong in their own category.
Why are Security Service officers listed here? MI5 are not spies. They are however spycatchers and national security agents. Quite different. Yes, they gather information/intelligence, but so do police officers, customs officials, government tax investigators etc (none of whom are described as spies). 86.17.210.22914:59, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
